RAS LANUF, Libya (AFP) - Residents of an eastern rebel town fled Monday fearing an attack by Moamer Kadhafi's forces, as the UN was sending an envoy to Tripoli and the US came under pressure to arm Libya's rebels.

Mohamad Samir, a Libyan army colonel who is fighting with the rebels, says that opposition forces intend to regroup and bring in heavy weapons and reinforcements from the east after Gaddafi troops inflicted a setback on their advance towards Tripoli. Yesterday the regime used air strikes, artillery and snipers to throw back the rebels in the small town of Bin Jawad. Rebel fighters complained that Gaddafi troops used civilians as human shields. Seven rebels were killed and 52 injured in the fighting, according to a casualty list posted at Ajdabiya hospital this morning. Witnesses said another six or seven dead were taken to the rebels’ main stronghold of Benghazi. The hospital in Ras Lanuf, which was closest to the fighting, was utterly deserted this morning.

Two weeks have elapsed since the first demonstrations in Benghazi and Tripoli. The disinformation campaign about Libya has sown confusion in the world. First a certainty: the analogies with events in Tunisia and Egypt are misplaced.
