Japan Tsunami

Confirmed deaths top 1,300
More than 1,300 people are confirmed dead from the devastating earthquake and tsunami which hit northeastern Japan on Friday.

Miyagi Prefecture has confirmed 515 deaths in Higashi-matsushima, Kesen-numa and Sendai cities.

In Arahama, Wakabayashi ward in Sendai city, 200 to 300 bodies were discovered on the beaches. They are believed to be of people who were swept away by the tsunami. Recovery operations are being hampered by the scale of wreckage.

In the coastal town of Minami-Sanriku, most private homes and other structures have been washed away. About 10,000 people, or more than half the total population of 17,000, remain missing.

Miyagi prefectural police say the death toll in their prefecture alone is almost certain to exceed 10,000.

Total confirmed deaths from the disaster now stand at 1,351. The number of people whose whereabouts are unknown exceeds 10,000.

An NHK survey found that as of 1pm Sunday, more than 310,000 people had entered evacuation facilities in 6 prefectures in the Tohoku region.

The Times (UK) :-Live: Bloodied Libya rebels forced to regroup

Mohamad Samir, a Libyan army colonel who is fighting with the rebels, says that opposition forces intend to regroup and bring in heavy weapons and reinforcements from the east after Gaddafi troops inflicted a setback on their advance towards Tripoli. Yesterday the regime used air strikes, artillery and snipers to throw back the rebels in the small town of Bin Jawad. Rebel fighters complained that Gaddafi troops used civilians as human shields. Seven rebels were killed and 52 injured in the fighting, according to a casualty list posted at Ajdabiya hospital this morning. Witnesses said another six or seven dead were taken to the rebels’ main stronghold of Benghazi. The hospital in Ras Lanuf, which was closest to the fighting, was utterly deserted this morning.

Pravda :-Libya: What the media is hiding

Two weeks have elapsed since the first demonstrations in Benghazi and Tripoli. The disinformation campaign about Libya has sown confusion in the world. First a certainty: the analogies with events in Tunisia and Egypt are misplaced. These rebellions contributed obviously to depoliticize street protests in both neighboring countries, but the peculiar Libyan process has characteristics inseparable from the conspiring strategy of imperialism and what can be defined as the metamorphosis of a leader.
